CAVE OF THE DRUMS: For The New Year!
Clos Pegase Winery, a majestic, neo-Mediterranean temple to wine and art designed by renowned architect Michael Graves, contains a dramatic cave theatre, with stunning acoustics and classical sculptures in illuminated niches. The cave theatre contains a built-in elevated stage and soft, warm lighting, and is reached at the end of a grand walk past 20,000 square feet of deep aging caves, full of reposing barrels as far as the eye can see. The theatre's acoustics are the finest of all the Carols in the Caves sites, with rich reverberation, even with a full house, thanks to the height of the arching, symmetrically formed ceiling. To enjoy music here, surrounded by statues that are hundreds of years old, is a sublime artistic experience. The entire property, both winery and grounds, is decorated with art from owner Jan Shrem's private collection, including many works of great value by famous masters. "Clos Pegase" means "walled vineyard of Pegasus," and a glorious painting of the fabled winged horse by the artist Odilon Redon graces its emblem, while with many nods to the god Bacchus, other works at Clos Pegase further acknowledge the mythical roots of wine. Here, the worlds of ancient and modern art converge; the labels of the winery's "Hommage" series bear the abstract art of contemporary masters, and large modern sculptures dot the grounds. The design of the building itself, a post-modern take on an ancient Cretan theme, is another example of the old meeting the new at Clos Pegase. While some of our concert sites are simple and rustic, Clos Pegase is an exquisitely appointed location, unique in every sense of the word, a paean to art and culture. Deep underground in its spacious cave chamber, encircled by sculpted beings that spring forth from the distant past, you will experience the nearness of the world of ancient myth, a restoring respite from the complex cares of modern times.
